During my creative writing class everyone gathered around in a circle to share the story’s we had been working on for the past few weeks. We shared our story’s out loud telling the struggles of our characters good and bad, then we went around the circle allowing each person to express a compliment and constructive feedback. My story was about an owl who had a life changing experience with a rare albino wolf. The story’s meaning was to express the idea that we should appreciate everything we have for something’s out their aren’t as lucky as us. The most constructive feedback I got was add the wolf getting shot in the end to further the point made that wolves are being hunted. I thank Mrs.Tremonte for that suggestion it was wonderful and I think it leaves the story on a touching note. I also fixed the part where the character sees the red eyes so it isn’t as confusing, thank you Maddie for that comment. I also took out the “anyway” (I don’t know who made that comment but thank you!).
Snow Hare Snowy Owl Cardinal
Albino Wolf
(Read this paragraph if you want a little information on animals so you can understand the story)
The main character Gaurdmith is a snowy owl, owls are known for their soundless flight and supper hearing. Their feathers have sound absorbing bristles so no sound with escape. Fun fact, owls have 14 bone in their neck! This allows them to turn their heads all the way around and even upside down! Guardmith also mentions perching birds, these are just the regular song birds you probably hear every day, their small and annoying. Cardinals are a type of perching birds that are found in cold climates. Snow hares were also mentioned in the story at a point, snow hares are prey of owls and other predators, their hard for predators to catch and rare to find. They often have white pelts and are very quick. Finally, I should explain about wolves. Wolves have had it very rough, they went through a long period of time where wolves were hunted because they were predators and hated by humans. The hunting and poaching of wolves in unprotected areas still continues to this day. The current population of wolves in the United states is about 3,606, which may seem like a lot but it is not! This number continues to drop, one day we may not even have a population number for wolves at the rate this is going. Albinos are especially rare, albino is word for ANY animal that has a genetic mutation causing it to have all white fur and pink or red eyes.
RED EYES
A weak shaft of sunlight light up the frosty ground, causing the snow to glitter and give off a blinding light to any who looked directly at it. A pair of snowy white wings were barely visible, and the feathers blended in with the bank of snow the owl was resting on. It was like he was just another blob of snow resting on the big pine’s branch. So, of course the prey didn’t notice the white snowy owl when it decided to search for food in the icy terrain. A blizzard had swept through the Pine Forrest last night covering the place in a cold blanket of snow. Although this was unfortunate for most because it covered up any traces of nuts and grass to eat, this was a streak of luck for Gaurdmith. This meant he could blend in perfectly with the surroundings and no prey would see him coming. It also meant prey would stay out longer in search of nuts and grass that had been covered by the snow giving Gaurdmith lots of time to prepare his strike on the unsuspecting prey.
So, Gaurdmith made himself comfortable as he waited for a mouse or shrew to find its way over to the tree he was perched in. He enjoyed listening to the perching bird’s songs as they sang carelessly for all to hear. Most nights it annoyed him, with his supper hearing ears, to the point he came after them and scared them into being silent so he could get some peace and quiet. But today Gaurdmith was in such a good mood he didn’t even mind when the cardinals joined in, and they usually drove him insane. He just sat and listened and waited. While he was waiting he began drift off into thought, thinking about when summer would come, thinking about the blizzards this winter, thinking about what it would be like to be a perching bird, and finally thinking about last night’s experience. He immediately tried to push down the thought, it had been the one thing he had wanted to avoid. It still gave him shivers, but there was no pint in fighting it and his curiosity drove him farther than his fear. So he recalled the strange memory.
A few months ago, when Gaurdmith was flying home from a hunting expedition of which he had caught a mouse and two-whole snow hares he’d seen something, something disturbing. A white silhouette of a creature in the distance. In most cases Gaurdmith would just assume it wasn’t a threat and move on, but this was different. As soon as he caught sight of the white creature a low rumbling sound began. It sounded unnatural in some way Gaurdmith couldn’t explain, so he flew over to investigate. But as soon as he got close, the creature ran away. It had practically disappeared by the time Gaurdmith got to where it had been standing. Gaurdmith shrugged deciding it was just some coyote or fox and flew home to his hollow in a big pine tree. After a few months the strange memory was for the most part forgotten until, this night, Gaurdmith was sleeping, he decided to skip a night of hunting and, instead, hunt during the day which was actually more common for Gaurdmith to do, he preferred the light of day to see his prey, even with his night vision.
He was sleeping until he heard something that roused him from his comfortable dream, a low unnatural growl. He blinked awake to be confronted with two burning red eyes blaring at him. He shrieked and immediately the face was withdrawn from his hollow. Gaurdmith could hear the crunch of retreating paws in the snow. But he didn’t dare follow. Gaurdmith had shrunk shivering in a corner of his hollow, shocked. The calm red eyes replaying over and over again in his mind.
The sound of a quick beating heart dragged Gaurdmith out of his thoughts. A mouse was nervously sniffing at the ground. Every now and then it stopped sniffing and looked around at its surrounding with big round eyes. Gaurdmith changed her perching stance to a diving one as she prepared to pounce putting one talon in front of the other and slightly raising his folded wings. Leaning forward he locked his eyes on the sniffling mouse, and then SWOOSH! Gaurdmith lifted off effortlessly. His wings gently combing the air as he sped by, and just as he was about to sink his talons into the small body of the mouse, but then out of nowhere the mouse it was snatched away by a big white creature. Gaurdmith let out a startled cry and spread his wings halting his dive and sweeping him up and out of the way of the white furry beast. He fell and clumsily landed on the ground. He turned around furious at the creature who had stolen his catch, and just as he was about to start mouthing off he stopped.
His beak dropped as he gazed upon the white fur of the animal who stole his catch. She long elegant legs perfect for running in deep snow. Her white fur practically glowed in the soft sunlight. Her long glossy furred tail swished, brushing the snow beneath her. She had pushed forward ears that made her look perfectly alert, and she had red calm eyes as she looked down at Gaurdmith with a gentle gaze. Red eyes, thought Gaurdmith as he stared in aww at the beautiful animal. An albino wolf he thought. It was a rare sight, wolves were being hunted by humans, so to see a beautiful albino wolf like this one was almost impossible, and yet Gardmith was seeing one. He watched as the wolf moved swiftly away and up over a small hill. The wolf paused and looked back at Gardmith with knowing eyes. Then it lifted its head and let out the most amazing sound, at first it was a soft note but then it grew louder until howl became powerful as if telling a story about many struggles and tears started to swell in Gaurdmith’s eyes. Then with a final dying note the wolf finished and gave one last glance at the Pine Forrest, locking eyes with Gaurdmith before turning away. Red eyes, was the last thought Gaurdmith had before it came appartant he would never see the graceful wolf alive. A sharp, piercing crack filled the air, the sound of a gun fireing and the snapping of bone filled the air. Gaurdmith lifted off into clumsy flight as he raced towards the top of the gentle slope that the wolf had moments before disappeared over. He stood stuned as he watched the prevailing scene. Bellow him was a dreadful sight, one that would forever scare Gaurdmiths mind. Scarlet red blood glisend in pools on the blank, white landscape. Lying, motionless in the pool of red liquid was a wolf that once shone great elogence and confidence. Her red eye’s called out to the sprits as if to ask why me?
